Re: Staff Performance Appraisal Policy and Procedures
POLICY
According to the University of Houston’s Manual on Administrative Policies and Procedures (MAPPs),
"The primary goal of the appraisal is to encourage ongoing objective communication between the employee and supervisor focused directly on university and departmental objectives and on the employee’s duties and performance: the secondary objective is then the continued improvement of every employee’s job performance."
Supervisors shall use the appraisal system to provide positive and constructive feedback regarding employee’s performance. Optometry shall conduct Staff Performance Appraisals during March of each year in order to comply with University policies and procedures regarding our appraisal system.. Each Optometry employee shall receive a yearly appraisal or a six-month appraisal if newly hired or transferred. Each supervisor shall receive a University of Houston "Supervisor’s Guide" for assistance and guidance in conducting appraisals.
PROCEDURE
The College of Optometry receives a yearly memo from the Human Resources department along with supplements and guides regarding appraisal system.
The College Business Administrator shall obtain a list of current staff employees from the Personnel database.
Using this list, the CBA or designee will compose memo and distribute to each supervisor with blank performance appraisals for each employee. The memo shall contain information such as guidelines, completion deadline, website address for electronic forms, expectations of supervisors and any other pertinent information.
The CBA or designee shall use the employee list as a checklist for returning appraisals. Notices shall be sent out to supervisors for delinquent appraisals. It is a University audit requirement that each college/department/unit have a current appraisal on file.
Upon return of appraisals, copies shall be made by CBA designee for department personnel file. Originals shall be forwarded to Human Resources. Security sensitive efforts should be made when working with appraisals.
This policy will be reviewed yearly and/or revised as needed.
